Mary E. McDowell CPS
Mrs. Grant
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. I am McDowell Elementary’s School Counselor. I am new to McDowell this year...but certainly not new to students and families. I have been a school counselor with Chicago Public Schools for 15 years after graduating with my Masters in Counseling from National Louis University. My involvement with the students takes place in several ways. One function of a school counselor is to implement whole-school intervention programs such as social/emotional learning, character education, and college and career awareness.
Another function of the counselor is to support students through facilitated student groups. Groups usually consist of 4-8 students that meet with the counselor weekly. Each group is usually focused on one topic, such as, anger coping, social skills, or trauma. Focus groups will be developed according to the needs of the students. These groups are great for any student, including students that have difficulty making friends, those that enjoy small groups, children that may have difficulty managing their emotions, as well as children who may just need support with social/emotional development. Students are welcomed to self-refer or are referred by teachers, staff and parents.
Aside from being a school counselor, I am also married and a mother of three adult sons. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family, traveling, shopping and listening to music.
I look forward to this new journey, building relationships and being an active asset to the entire McDowell school community. Please feel free to contact me at (773) 535-6404 if you have any questions or concerns or by email lmcampbell3@cps.edu.
